Steve Logan - My Kind Of Life

Everybody's Talking
Steve Logan
My Kind Of Life
Nocturne Hollywood - 1969

The jacket notes indicate that Steve got around although I can't find hide nor hair of him on the internet. Apparently he toured with The Everly Brothers as a comic. He went on to become "a sensation at Hawaii's Queen Surf Hotel" and then he moved on to Los Vegas to play The Riviera amongst other well known clubs as a lounge act.

Steve's got a big lush voice, but for this record, he forgot to leave his "stage" voice at the club. The treatments are way over the top and he has trouble controlling some notes. There are a number of treasures here... but Neil Diamond's "Everybody's Talking" is the better lounge number.

Enjoy!

Comment from the original post: I knew this guy back in the 80s. He was an excellent piano/jazz teacher and went on to get a degree in music. His voice was more rough than whats heard here but it lent him to do charecter voices on the radio with excellent humor.JC

  1. Steve Logan has not been nor will he be completely forgotten. I think of him from time to time. We first met in Flagstaff AZ about 1967, where he was playing a local club and performed on campus at NAU. I caught his act at the Las Vegas Riviera and also at the Queen Surf nightclub on Waikiki Beach. He was a celebrity in Hawaii and stars, including Do Ho, Jack Lord, Tommy Sands, etc. came by regularly to catch his show. Flagstaff AZ had a special draw for Steve and he came to visit in 1992 and presented me with the "My Kind of Life" album. It was the last time I saw him. Lost touch and have been unsuccessful locating him on the internet. Any updates would be appreciated. 1.03.2013

  2. I was a good friend of Steve's and played music with him in the late 70's and early 80's in Southwest Colorado. He went on to write some classical music after getting his degree in music. Haven't seen or heard from him for about ten years or so. He's the kind of friend you just run into and it's like you saw him yesterday.

    1. A friend steered me here where I found old friends. Old friends can find me, Steve Barkhurst, nee Steve Logan, on Facebook or by email. Still a working musician at 75 and healthier than I should be considering...

  3. Last time I saw Steve was in Flagstaff AZ in the early 70s. He had recently married and was introducing his wife to the area he loved. He was staying with the Mark Sapp family, local realtors. Steve's father was a well known song writer in the 50 and 60s. No luck tracking him down on the internet. Tony in Colorado

    1. Steve lived with our family in the 70s. I am Steve Sapp son of Mark Sapp. I often wonder what happened to him. I was going through an old box today and found the hand written lyrics to the song he wrote on November 25, 1974 called “The Whereabouts of Me”. I wish I had been able to catch up with him to get him to sing this one more time. Sorry to hear that he has passed.

    1. my kind of life is a hard life most of the time I'm alone. my kind of life isn't easy to live but it kind of life is my own. today I might think it's not worth it but tomorrow I'll try it again. my kind of life isn't easy to live but living is what makes me a man. I can sing about bright nights and placrs where life for a moment seemed bright. but the lights always and them and the people go home so I sit up and stare at the night.

  6. I remember his signature statement during his shows at the Queen Surf on Waikiki: SUMBISH!!! I even have that on posters he gave out after the show. He also sang many of Kui Lee's songs including: I'll Remember You; Tiny Bubbles; My Life and many more. Fond memories from the mid 60's.

  8. I remember Steve in the lounge at the Royal Lanai on Seaside and Kalakaua, 1964, when I worked there briefly as a hostess, and then a cocktail waitress when I turned 20 (then the legal drinking/serving age). He was a great guy, a fine singer who incorporated a running commentary into his act. So glad he's still in the business.

    1. I too remember Steve at the Royal Lanai... remember well his version of te "Cotton Fields" song and his singing songs from West Side Story. I would buy him a Zombie drink, for two dollars, once in awhile in late evening... a truly great entertainer. I was in the Navy Submarine service at the time, stationed in Pearl Habor... fond memories

  9. I went to San Rafael High School with Steve (Barkhurst) heard him in the radio when I was in the Navy in Pearl Harbour and then in 1969 caught his act at one of the casinos lounges when he was appearing with his group,Logan and The heros. I'd like to see him today, if it was only to say "HI".

  13. I was in Oahu in 1967 and went to two Steve Logan shows. I was 19 and I remember I had a crush on him. I got his autograph and I guess more! I am putting old photographs in albums (great pastime for the shelter in place pandemic orders). I wondered about his background and googled some info which took me to this site. I have a photograph of him and I wrote on the back "The night Steve Logan kissed me." I would post it, but I don't see that ability on this site. I'm glad to learn some things about his life and that he has passed on peacefully.

  15. I saw Steve perform 1966 in Pueblo, CO and recently ran across the program from that show, which was a benefit. I was 15 and had a crush on anything male and Steve was no exception. He made friends with my parents and called and visited whenever he was passing through Pueblo. I've learned so many more things about Steve from this site. Thank you all! May he rest in peace.
