This is "the music of the Hills," their music and yours.

  4. Both Louis Alonzo Stamey and Helen Audrey Stamey died in the 90s. Here is Louis Stamey on Find a Grave and you can also see Audrey listed. My parents ran a campground in Cherokee NC in the mid 60s on US 19 about three miles before you got to the village of Cherokee. Louis and Audrey played every weekend at the Whitetree Gift Shop in front of the campground. Skipping up the gift shop Friday and Saturday nights was the highlight of our weekend to buck dance and just hang out. I was 14 or 15 years old then. I got to know both of them very well and helped to carry their amps etc. out to the shelter in front of all the bedspreads the gift shop sold where they played. There was a dance floor in front of the shelter where all of us (Indians an white rednecks!) buck danced to their music. What a blast it was!! Louis occasionally had a couple of snorts and really leaned into playing those rockabilly pieces until he had too many! Audrey would get so mad at him. Some great memories and I stall have for or five pieces by them on my iPod to listen to when I have a drink. So many memories of that time..... Louis dressed up in his finest full Western style Indian dress with that full head dress grinning like a chesire cat and getting into it and Audrey dressed beautifully in INdian attire also!
